SAMUEL DE CHAMPLAIN

1a.Find a picture of Samuel De Champlain. What does he look like? Explain the
picture in 5-8 sentences.

There is a picture of Samuel De Champlain. In this picture, he dressed in red and wore a argenteous armor. In his left hand, there was a headpiece. In his right hand, there was a sword enclasped by him and was bound it to the ground. He had long, blonde curls. It looked nice. He was looking forward to the front and looked very imposing. He stood on a rock and there was a soldier under him. In the rear of him, it was the sea. That was so beautiful and it made him like a hero.

He is Samuel De Champlain who was born in 1567, Brouage, Saintonge and died in Quebec, 1635. His nationality is France. He has explored many places of Canada and was honored with "Father of New France". His father was a captain of ship so that he wanted to let his son become a navigator. Then, he joined the French army in 1587 and became a Mariner , then a soldier.

2. What is his relationship with Canada? Why is he important to Canada?
The relationship of he and Canada was very good. After he killed two Iroquois chiefs, Samuel helped Indians to fight with the Iroquois so that the relationship between France and Iroquois became so bad, but it was good for Indian and French relationship. He was very important for Canada because he was the "Father of New France", a French navigator, geographer, cartographer, draughtsman, soldier, explorer, ethnologist, diplomat, chronicler, and the founder of Quebec City on July 3, 1608, of which he was the administrator for the rest of his life.

3. When did he explore? What was happening during history at this time?
His exploration was from 1603 to 1633. He began to explore in 1603. During g this time, Samuel De Champlain killed two Iroquois chiefs so that a fight began by the French and their allies against the Iroquois, continued with occasional intermissions until the French supremacy in Canada was ended. In the spring of 1608, he found the Quebec City and was sent it to England.

This is a map of his exploration. Look at the picture, he passed St.Lawrence River in 1603. In 1604, he went to Port Royal. In 1605 and 1606, he arrived in Cape Cod. In 1608, he arrived in Quebec and explored Lake Champlain in 1609. In 1615,Samuel passed Ottawa River and Lake Ontario. These were the places he had been to in the map.


5. Why did he explore? What were his reasons for exploration?
He went to explore because he was asked to find the New World by the King. At his first exploration, he just wanted to go out because of his interest in 1603. Then, he went to find a settlement for French. Then, during his exploration, he killed two people so that caused a battle between the Indians and Iroquois. He needed to protect the Indians became a reason for his exploration. After he found Quebec, he wanted to make a map of North America. One more reason was he wanted to let the world know more about Canada and the Native People. To promote Christianity was also a reason for his exploration.

6. How did he explore? What transportation methods did he use?
He did a great deed in his exploration. He used his ship to explore everywhere because sailing was the only way he could used at that time-there was no cars, planes and trains. Because he always needed to pass the sea so that he need to use the ship to go. It was helpful and convenient to use the ship for him to explore. Ship maybe was the only transportation he could use to explore.

This is a picture of a statue of Samuel De Champlain. He looked like a hero in the picture, in fact, he really was. He held his sword and wore his armor. Power is the only word I can think of to describe him. He is standing as high as that he touches the blue sky. This picture showed his strength of prince.
