Samuel De Champlain wanted to have a monopoly on the fur trade because it would help his country develop. The fur trade was a good way to make a lot of money and it was fashionable at that time. If Samuel De Champlain had the monopoly of the fur trade, other consumers and buyers need ed buy resources and matters from him so that he would bring a lot of money into his country easily. Another reason was he wanted to control the monopoly so that the matters and the prices were all in his control. So, he would have powerful authority in economy.

Look at it, there is a wooden chair on the green grass. It also has a big porraceous tree beside the chair. When I look at this picture, it gives me a feeling of fresh and warmth.

There are some people in this picture and a wooden cask on the green grass. I see maybe a little bed made of wood and straw near the cask. There has slight sunshine irradiate to the grass and makes this picture has a hazy field of view so that makes it become very beautiful.

Reflection

1. What have you learned since September in Canadian Studies? (Or since you started to take the class)

Since the beginning of the lesson-Canadian Studies, I have learned so many things that were uncounted. Essay is a very important part of my study. It is a very good and helpful lesson for me to learn and use. I have learned how to write a personal essay and expository essay. I have known the styles of them and how to write them expertly. I can use less time to write them than before. I can remember that when I had to write my first essay-"Hero", I was stupefied about the style of the essay. It was so strange and new to me. Now, I can get my ideas faster than before. I also learned so many knowledge about Canada. I learned the native people and many places of Canada. I knew more about Canada, such as its cultures, languages and people. From the beginning of this term, I got a book-"Wordily Wise". It taught me many vocabularies so that I got more knowledge. I didn't only learn this, but also learned how to work together well. Canadian Studies taught me how to cooperate with other people, this is a really important part of my study because everyone needs help sometimes. Thus, this lesson really influence me a lot, because it not only teach me knowledge, but also how to be a good person. Thanks for Canadian Studies!

2. What is the most memorable lesson you remember? (if you weren't here, maybe at another school)

The most memorable lesson in my memory was the Puppet Show. This lesson really gave a profound impression. To be honest, I don't like to do handwork because I am not good at doing it. From that lesson, I found that I liked to do it. I began to have a little interest in doing handwork. This makes me surprising because I didn't like to do it at all before. I have found its interest. During the time of doing the Puppet Show, I was glad to have it. Sometimes, I had a little expect to have that class. Another point was I always worked with my partners. We worked together and cooperated with each other. We also helped each person when someone needed help.

3. Think about your life as a student here since September. Have you changed? How?

I know I have changed since September. I could feel my change. Before I came here, I didn't do my homework very carefully because Chinese teachers didn't have many requests in students' homework. They always care about your scores of exams. After I was a student here, I have known I need to put more and more efforts into my homework. It plays a very important part in my study and mark. If you don't care about it, you won't get a good mark no matter how smart you are and how well you did on your exams. I have realized this major point so that I put more efforts into my homework.

4. What is your goal for yourself by June? What is your plan to study?

My goal is to be better that now and get A of all lessons by June. It's really important for me because I am a student. I need to study hard. I need to get good marks. This goal will encourage me to work harder and harder. I know I am lazy now. I can feel I'm lazy now. I don't want to keep this situation. It's bad for me. So, I will do my homework more carefully and review my vocabularies to get good marks on exams. This is what I need to do and what I should do. I will try to do what I said.

5. What are you most proud of in school since September? Have you done your best?

My heart that wants to study and want to be a very good student makes me feel proud, because I want to study harder and get good marks. Though I didn't do it very well, I have a heart wants to do. This is very important, at least I think so. Every matter always depends on yourself. If people don't want to do, he won't do it well. If people want to do it well, he will try and work hard so that they can get good marks. I didn't do my best because I always have a little lazy in my heart. Sometimes, I admire people who always work hard and I admire they always have heart to do that. I really admire them!! I need to try my best. I need to and must to do!! I won't let myself be lazy because I need to be a good student.

Bonus
1. Is there anything else you want to tell me or reflect about?

Dear Ms. Chan, I think I become lazy now. Have you felt it? I know sometimes I need to do, but I always let my lazy come out. I worry about myself sometimes. I really don't want to do that. I always think about it, I have known I can not be lazy any more! It's bad for my study! I don't want to let this occupy and won't let this happen again. Now, I have known what I must do.

What You Think Is What You See

Questions
Answer each question in 3-5 sentences.

1. If the maps around you showed the existence of the Northwest Passage, would you believe it? Why?

I will believe it because people don't know if the Northwest Passage has gone. They just can't find it on the map so that it is possible that the Northwest Passage is still existing. Though there has been uncounted people working on it, we can't make sure that the Northwest Passage is disappeared.

2. If you were John Cabot and someone told you the Northwest Passage didn't exist. What would you say? What would you feel? How would you react?

Oh! That's great! I can go to explore in another way. There is a new passage to use. I feel so excited that I can explore for my country's development in another way. I will start my new exploration by using the Northwest Passage.

3. Find a map by Humphrey Gilbert from 1582. What do you see in the picture? Explain.

http://www.civilization.ca/cmc/exhibitions/hist/frobisher/frsub02e.shtml

This is a picture of the map by Humphrey Gilbert. It is strange to me because I have never seen it. In the picture, there is a shape of a ship. There are many islands and oceans in the picture. It looks askew and doesn't look like real earth. America and China are very close in this picture of the earth. That's impossible.

4. Why did the Northwest Passage suit the goals (agenda) of the European explorers and monarchs?

Because it is a approach to find Asia. Asia is a good place for explorers, because it is strange and new to people. They all looked forward for it. They can find it and communicate with different people. They could exchange their cultures and did some economic trades. Monarchs would be glad because they can expand their areas and made their countries more and more bigger. Asia has lots of riches so that they could find them to develop their countries.

5.Feedback loops help us to see reality as a system. Can you think of an example of a feedback loop from your own life? Look at page 225 of your textbook to help you.
In my life ,there is a feedback loop about eating food and spending energy. People all need to eat food because we need to get energy from them. I eat food everyday and get more energy from food. Food can provide energy, protein and calcium to me. I can have energy to go to school, study and play with friends. Then, when I spend my most energy, I need to eat food to get energy. So, this is a feedback loop in my life.
6. What did you learn so far about explorers and the colonization of Canada?

I have learned some great explorers who did some great deeds, such as John Cabot and Jacques Cartier. They both went to find Asia, but they didn't find it. Though they failed, but they found other new matters. So, they also did great acts in history. Europeans got success to be strong so that they became colonizers.

Flat Earth

1. Find two pictures showing the earth is flat. Explain what you see in EACH picture in 8-12 sentences.

1.hot-topic.co.nz/2008/04/...

Here is a picture of the Earth. It is a cross-sectional view of the earth. The earth looks flat in this picture. It shows people everything on the world. This picture is also very colorful and easy to see what parts they are. It is almost blue in this picture, it maybe the sea. I can see the seas, the islands and the blue sky on the earth. It has the sun in it and the sun is at the edge of the Flat Earth.

2.boxofrain.wordpress.com/2007/08/...

This is a picture of the Flat Earth. It just looks like a semicircle in the midair. It shows me some parts of the earth. There are many clouds I can see in it. It's so beautiful. I can see the blue sky, the water and the soil under the ground. It also shows me the deep soil under the ground. If you look at it carefully, you can find that there is a moon on the right corner of the picture. Around the earth, there are some other orbs.

2. Imagine you are a person who believes the earth is still flat today. What are 5 reasons to support your argument that it is still flat?

1.The ground of the earth is flat. We can feel it when we walk on the ground.

2.We can not see the earth is round by using our eyes.

3.We can stand, run and lie on the ground smoothly. We won't slip because the earth is flat.

4.The horizon is a straight line that we see.

5.We can not feel the earth is moving.

3. Do you think human beings have a false concept of the earth and the universe today?

I think human beings have a false concept of the earth and the universe today. Everyone may thought the earth was flat in the past, but now many people accept the truth-"The earth is round". Though people used a lot of technologies to search on the earth, people think the earth is round now. People in the past all thought the earth was flat, but the idea has changed now. This makes people confused. It is hard to identify which is right. After all, the nature is mystery to discover. So, it is possible that humans have a false concept of the earth and the universe today.
